In a production process there are always a risk that errors might occur. These errors can influence both the efficiency of the process and the products that are being produced, with additional costs and deficient quality as a result. In more severe cases it can lead to incidents and accidents with risk for personal injuries, both for operators in the production and the end user of the product. Even before the production is started, it is desirable to maximize the efficiency of the production process and to minimize the numbers of errors. During ongoing production is it important to detect and attend to faults and deficiencies in the process and the products that are being produced.
 
An evident overview of what faults can occur is obtained by conducting a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis prior to every new manufacturing process. For every step in the process potential failure modes are listed, together with the effects if they occur and what possible causes there are. Further it is decided what control should be performed in order to detect the errors, as well as recommended actions. A Failure Modes and Effects Analysis is a risk analysis that follows specific standards and demands from the industry.
